Vitamin supplements are widely discussed. Minerals far less so, yet they are at least equally important. In nature, 75 mineral elements exist that together fulfil three fundamental functions: they provide building blocks for bones and connective tissue, they transmit electrical impulses through the nervous system, and they act as catalysts in virtually all physiological processes in the body. The question is not whether you need minerals, but whether your diet still provides them in sufficient quantities. When developing the Vegan Mineral Complex, founder Paul Klein Breteler applied three principles that we believe every mineral formula should follow: 1. Complete, not selective. Most mineral supplements contain two or three minerals in high doses. But minerals operate as a network. Each mineral influences the absorption and excretion of other minerals. Taking just two minerals in high doses risks disrupting the existing balance rather than restoring it. A good formula therefore contains all minerals and trace elements. 2. Supplementary, not excessive. We still obtain a large proportion of the minerals we need from our daily diet. A daily mineral formula should be exactly that: a supplement. Not a megadose that throws the balance in your body into disarray, but a modest, well-considered supplementation that replenishes what your diet no longer delivers as a matter of course. 3. Natural and recognisable to the body. Synthetic mineral salts are foreign to the body. Natural minerals in ionic form are recognised by the body and processed via the same pathways as minerals from food. This makes a fundamental difference to absorption. The Vegan Mineral Complex is the direct result of these three principles: a well-considered daily foundation that supplements the full mineral spectrum in a modest, physiologically logical dose. Minerals are disappearing from our food Paul Bergner, nutrition scientist and author of The Healing Power of Minerals, collected data on the mineral content of foods dating back to 1914. His conclusion was alarming: the average mineral content in vegetables declined by a factor of 5 between 1914 and 1997. The combined averages of calcium, magnesium and iron in cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes and spinach dropped from approximately 400 mg to approximately 75 mg. Source: Bergner 1997, The Healing Power of Minerals. The figure shows the combined averages of calcium, magnesium and iron in vegetables in the US over the period 1914–1997. The cause is the rise of intensive agriculture. Agricultural soils are selectively fertilised with synthetic fertilisers containing only a handful of minerals: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. All other minerals and trace elements are not replenished, causing the soil to become further depleted with each harvest cycle. The consequence: even people with a varied and conscious diet do not always obtain sufficient minerals through food alone. Why isolated minerals do not solve the problem The logical response to a mineral deficiency is: take a supplement. But the choice of supplement matters greatly. Anyone buying a magnesium tablet or a calcium tablet is taking one or two isolated substances, often in doses far exceeding natural intake. That sounds effective, but it ignores a fundamental fact: minerals do not work alone. The lines in the diagram show how minerals and trace elements influence each other’s absorption, metabolism or excretion. (Bergner 1997: The Healing Power of Minerals.) The diagram shows how complex the network is. Magnesium influences calcium, but also potassium, sodium and zinc. Calcium in turn is connected to phosphorus, iron and manganese. A high dose of one mineral can inhibit the absorption of another, or accelerate the excretion of yet another. It is a chain reaction that largely takes place beyond our awareness. This is why the Vegan Mineral Complex does not contain one or two minerals in high doses, but the full spectrum of 75 elements in the ratios as they naturally occur in marine sources. Not intervening, but supplementing. Nutrition from the sea: why marine minerals are so well suited to our body There is a remarkable similarity that few people are aware of. The mineral composition of our extracellular fluid — the fluid that surrounds all our cells and makes up approximately one fifth of all our body fluid — closely resembles the mineral composition of seawater. Evolutionary biologists see this as indirect evidence that all life forms on land once originated from the sea. This has a direct consequence for supplementation. Seawater and marine organisms contain all 75 minerals and trace elements in the correct ratios to each other and in ionic form. Ions are the smallest soluble form of a mineral, and they can be absorbed directly through the intestinal wall without the body needing to convert them first. This makes marine minerals the most physiologically logical choice as a food supplement. What is in each capsule? Each capsule contains 600 mg of mineral concentrate from two complementary sources: Aquamin® Mg TG (300 mg) is a concentrate derived from the clean seawater of the Atlantic Ocean. It is the primary source of magnesium in this formula: 113 mg per capsule, or 32% of the daily reference intake. Additionally, it provides dozens of trace minerals in their natural ratios. Aquamin® TG (300 mg) is derived from the red algae Lithothamnion Calcareum. This algae grows slowly on the seabed in coral-like structures and during this process absorbs minerals from the seawater, which are stored in its cell structure. The result is a naturally calcium-rich extract: 94 mg per capsule (10% RI), alongside a broad spectrum of trace elements. The two sources complement each other. The seawater concentrate provides the magnesium, the red algae the calcium. Together they form the foundation of 75 minerals and trace elements, from iron and manganese to zinc, selenium, iodine and more than 60 other trace elements. All in ionic form, all in the ratios that the body recognises. Particularly suited to a plant-based diet Those who eat plant-based make a conscious choice. But a plant-based diet brings specific considerations in the area of minerals. Dairy products — one of the most important sources of calcium and magnesium in a Western diet — are eliminated. Plant-based sources such as green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds do contain minerals, but absorption is often hindered by phytate and oxalate that are naturally present in these foods. A study in the journal Nutrients (Demehin et al., 2026) demonstrates why marine minerals offer a solution here. The researchers showed that the trace minerals in seawater concentrate protect magnesium from binding by phytate and oxalate from food. In other words: particularly with a plant-based diet, where phytate and oxalate are naturally abundant, this marine source offers a significant absorption advantage over synthetic alternatives. The Vegan Mineral Complex is entirely plant-based: marine minerals in an HPMC capsule, without animal-derived excipients. The full spectrum, in a form that fits a vegan lifestyle. Authorised health claims The Vegan Mineral Complex contains magnesium and calcium in significant amounts. For both minerals, the following health claims have been officially authorised by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA): Magnesium (113 mg per capsule — 32% RI): ✓ Contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue ✓ Contributes to electrolyte balance ✓ Contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism ✓ Contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system ✓ Contributes to normal muscle function ✓ Contributes to normal protein synthesis ✓ Contributes to normal psychological function ✓ Contributes to the maintenance of normal bones ✓ Contributes to the maintenance of normal teeth ✓ Has a role in the process of cell division Calcium (94 mg per capsule — 10% RI): ✓ Contributes to the maintenance of normal bones ✓ Contributes to the maintenance of normal teeth ✓ Contributes to normal muscle function ✓ Contributes to normal blood clotting ✓ Contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism ✓ Contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system ✓ Contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes ✓ Has a role in the process of cell division and specialisation Who is the Vegan Mineral Complex suitable for? The conclusion was clear: there is a need for a supplement that does not address a single deficiency, but restores the full mineral picture. A formula that replenishes what the soil no longer delivers, in the form that the body recognises. That vision resulted in a capsule containing exclusively marine raw materials that carry all 75 elements. No synthetic additions, no megadoses, no compromises.
